December 01, 2005

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation won 2005 CCMA (Japan Cemented Carbide Tool Manufacturers' Association) Awards for its technical exploits.

MITSUBISHI MATERIALS CORPORATION

Development of new "UC51 Series" CVD coated grade for turning of cast iron

UC51 Series
    1.Technical features
  • Higher wear and damage resistance than conventional cast iron turning grades. A toughened, high hardness carbide substrate and an additional highly wear resistant coating layer together with the development of ultra smooth coating technology for the top coating layer.

    2.Novelty / Originality
  • Use of a hybrid surface treatment technology, a combination of conventional smooth coating technology (mechanical treatment) and a chemical smoothing technology. Owing to the crystal control technology, a 50% finer crystal particle for the TiCN layer than previously available gave dramatically increased wear resistance.

3.Contribution / Benefits for the Association
  • The achievement of long tool life for high-speed turning of cast iron and offering a tool that promises a great contribution towards reducing machining times.

Development of IMPACT MIRACLE end mills for machining hardened materials

IMPACT MIRACLE end mills
    1.Technical features
  • The achievement of long tool life for machining pre-hardened mould materials.Enables efficient high-speed, stable machining and reliability for milling hardened mould materials over 60HRC.

    2.Novelty / Originality
  • The Single Phase Nano Crystal Technology increases the film hardness and oxidation temperatures of the (Al,Ti,Si)N to 3700HV and 1300°C, respectively. Additionally the friction coefficient at high temperatures is lowered. Special cemented carbide material and optimized cutting edge end and flute geometry increase wear and chipping resistance.

3.Contribution / Benefits for the Association
  • Expanding of the work piece material range for machining pre-hardened mould materials in addition to extending tool life. Already supplying a great contribution to productivity increases and lead time reduction for highly accurate mould machining.
