Additional FY - SY Chip Breakers for Low Carbon Steel

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation has recently developed and manufactured
a total of 8 new types of FY and SY chip breakers for (1)low carbon steel. These chip
breakers will start to be sold by Mitsubishi Materials Tools Corporation (President:
Osamu Takata, Headquarters: 1-6-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo).

In January 2005, Mitsubishi Materials Corporation launched the FY and SY chipbreaker
range. These chip breakers have gained a good reputation for excellent chip control when
machining carbon steel. The latest addition to the FY - SY range
includes a total of 8 new DNMG insert types with 4 that are 6.35mm thick.
Key features of the FY and SY chip breakers are as follows.
- 1.
- The sharp wall of the breaker ensures good chip control. They can be used at a wider
range of feeds when cutting low carbon steel than existing general use breakers. This
is due to being designed specially for this purpose. They generate well-curled chips
even from very soft materials such as (2)iron plate, solving the various problems arising
from tangled chips.
- 2.
- The rake angle is designed at the optimum level with a balance of sharpness and toughness.
Because of the resulting low cutting force, these breakers can prevent (3)vibration and
deliver superior surface finish when cutting low rigidity applications.
- 3.
- The standard grades available are a PVD cermet VP25N and a CVD coated grade UE6020
and can be used over a wide application range. The MIRACLE coating on the VP25N grade
gives high welding resistance and delivers superior surface finishes. The tough UE6020
grade has a high fracture resistance and allows for stable cutting even when machining
with light interrupted cuts.

(1)Low carbon steel:
- Steel with up to 0.3% carbon content. JIS S10C-S30C, SPC, SPH. Owing to their high
malleability these materials can be used as a pressing material.
(2)Iron plate:
- Colloquial term of cold rolled steel plate (SPC) and hot rolled mild steel plate
(SPH). Both materials contain up to 0.15% carbon and have an especially high flattening
property.
(3)Vibration:
- Intensifying vibrations during machining where half of the amplitude measures more
than 10 - 20 micrometers. But generally, it often refers to vibrations that cause undesirable
results regardless of the size of the amplitude.
