NX3035, New Cermet Grade for Steel Turning

June 29, 2006

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation has recently developed and manufactured a new cermet grade, NX3035 for steel turning.  This new grade will start to be sold by Mitsubishi Materials Tools Corporation (President: Osamu Takata, Headquarters: 1-6-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo) from July 7, 2006.
NX3035  Cermet is mainly used for finishing operations because it provides superior surface finishes when turning steel. However, when strong thermal shocks or impacts are applied during machining, cracks can occur and then develop to cause fracturing that results in unpredictable and unstable tool life. The new cermet grade, NX3035, has dramatically improved thermal shock and chipping resistance due to the special alloy binder and optimized alloy structure that provides extra high thermal conductivity (PAT. pending). As a result, NX3035 exhibits a highly stable cutting edge performance even during wet cutting that usually causes instability in conventional cermet grades.
123 different types of NX3035 inserts are available. The range includes FY and SY type chipbreakers that are suitable for good chip control when cutting low carbon steel. The NX3035 series will gradually expand to include new chipbreakers and geometries. Mitsubishi Materials has set the sales target at a value of 800 million yen in the first year.

Key features

1.
Special alloy binder
Cermet is a composite material made of hard particles of titanium carbo-nitride (TiCN) based ceramics and a metallic binder such as Ni. The new NX3035, uses a special alloy binder with extra high thermal conductivity and bonding strength. As a result, NX3035 delivers highly improved thermal shock resistance with less thermal cracking. This enables NX3035 to exhibit a highly stable cutting edge performance even during wet cutting conditions that usually cause instability in conventional cermet grades.
2.
Optimized alloy structure
By forming the alloy structure from particles of an appropriate size, high resistance to crack development and thermal conductivity is maintained. This results in the rigidity and thermal-shock resistance of NX3035 being higher than conventional cermet grades. NX3035 displays excellent fracture resistance under various cutting conditions, ensuring improved cutting edge stability.
3.
FY and SY chipbreakers for low carbon steel
Due to a combination of the FY chipbreaker for finishing and the SY chip breaker for semi-finishing that both feature excellent chip control, the NX3035 range offers good chip control and gives good surface finishes. This control is evident even in difficult applications that usually cause chip control problems such as low carbon steel and iron plate turning.
