In recent machining applications, how metal removal volumes can be increased and how machining time can be reduced is becoming a key factor to achieve higher machining efficiency. However, as high speeds are used to perform high efficiency machining, if the insert fractures, this may also cause the insert pocket to break, making the tool holder unusable. When using the conventional tool, if the insert pocket breaks, the tool holder has to be replaced with new one, resulting in increased costs. Especially with expensive, integral type tools with a carbide shank, the cost becomes considerable. To solve these problems, Mitsubishi Materials developed the screw-in tools that can be used by simply changing the head when the insert pocket breaks. The screw-in tool allows the simple and economical use of Mitsubishi Materials die & mould tools by designing head type tools with a screw type clamp section.
